A downloadable simulator for Windows and Linux

***Tech Demo***
The current release is a tech demo to introduce the concept and understand the interest.  The core is rather stable and robust to build on, and I plan to release with an agile methodology.  However, expect little odds and ends that are not perfect as this project is very much in active development.  Please join our Discord server to get involved, provide feedback, or get answers to any questions you might have.

The demo is showcasing the final boss of operating experience.  With the hardest version proven, expect a game that starts with a much more early 90's tech stack and not a compositing graphical desktop.  Theming is not exposed in the demo, but the UI is highly customizable.

An Authentic, Hyper-Realistic Retro-Hacking Simulation

Step back into the golden age of the hacker subculture, spanning the raw analog days of the 1970s through the digital frontier of the early 2000s. Handle is an immersive, mechanics-driven simulation that trades Hollywood hacking tropes for uncompromising authenticity.

Prepare to dive into a true POSIX-style environment built on a kernel-based process model, where mechanical precision is your greatest tool. Master the lost arts of legacy telecommunications: practice phone phreaking, master blue boxes, and run war-dialing scripts to uncover hidden networks. Hack computers with realistic methods all while learning to operate an early Linux system like a pro!

Welcome to Xyfox OS

You aren't just clicking through fake menus. Handle puts you behind the terminal of Xyfox OS, a meticulously crafted fictional Linux-style distribution complete with its own virtual file system, mascot, and graphical desktop.

Operate a fully functional suite of in-game applications:

  • Diver: Navigate and manipulate the virtual file system.
  • Nova: Manage your audio experience with the desktop MP3 player.
  • Forge: Create and edit visuals within the terminal environment.
  • Worm: A snake-like game for you to play while that MP3 file downloads over your 56k modem.

Shatter the Fourth Wall

Handle blurs the line between simulation and the real world. Using the in-game Connekted client, you can dial out from Xyfox OS to connect directly to live, real-world MUDs and legacy BBS servers still operating today.

Deep Cosmic Isolation

Your deep-dives into the network are accompanied by a dynamic, 90-minute real-time musical score perfectly mapped to the game's 24-hour day cycle. The soundscape is heavily rooted in ethereal space ambient and deep cosmic isolation, setting a hypnotic atmosphere for late-night terminal sessions.

Technical Fidelity

Built on a custom, hardware-accelerated texture-rendering framework, Handle delivers high quality window compositing without sacrificing its authentic aesthetic. Every UI element, layout manager, and input widget is driven by a bespoke, unified framework designed specifically to make Xyfox OS feel remarkably responsive and alive.

Evolving Worlds

As the days go by, new hardware will come to market, software and security will improve, and your world will change with every passing year.  You'll need to learn new tools of the trade to keep your finances in the green and the G-Men off your back. Experience a decade long journey though hacking history and culture while you build a legacy as an elite.

Boot up. Dial in. Seize your Handle.
